The exhibition presents 32 design projects that won last year’s Stefan Lengyel Scholarship of Excellence, arranged into five thematic rooms and narrated through the metaphors of handwritten letters and packages sent out of caring. The visual identity and the layout serve as a response to the core themes raised by this year’s projects: a return to manuality, craftsmanship, and community building. The alternative curatorial text can be read below.

Dear Visitor and the Whole Wide World,

Greetings from the heart of MOME, a symbolic place we all visit frequently. The reception may be patchy, but the company is good, and everyone is working on some exciting projects. As the storm clouds clear, so does our sense of direction about our time here; and we would like to invite you into this process. You are often on our minds, as we reflect on how we might best support you as designers and creators. What does design even mean today? How can something so indefinite define the world?

Dear Visitor and the Whole Wide World,

Greetings from the heart of MOME, a symbolic place we all visit frequently. The reception may be patchy, but the company is good, and everyone is working on some exciting projects. As the storm clouds clear, so does our sense of direction about our time here; and we would like to invite you into this process. You are often on our minds, as we reflect on how we might best support you as designers and creators. What does design even mean today? How can something so indefinite define the world?

We believe that our lives cannot be improved without it, yet we are fully aware of the many unsustainable and alienating situations it has created. That is why we are not making grand promises – even small steps can hold power when guided by empathy and openness.

For the fourth time, our community has recognised thirty-two projects with the Stefan Lengyel Excellence Scholarship, and we would like to showcase them to you. Together, they proved too heavy to ship in a single package, so we divided them into five themed bundles to keep things simple. As you unpack them, small rooms will unfold before you… Head in, and linger as long as you like!

So, what is inside? Everything we poured our energy into over the past year at our drawing boards, hunched over our laptops during late-night sessions before the Kipak showcase events in the company of each other and plenty of Club Mates.

We present local issues from Budapest to Tomor: from the city-center housing crisis to interventions supporting Roma youth; we explore new perspectives in the interplay between humans and nature through speculative design and reimagined everyday objects; and, as a key theme, we focus on the development of education by showcasing project ideas for every age group, from first graders to university students, that aim to make learning and teaching more humane today. We approach social issues affecting different groups with empathy, often drawing on our own personal experiences. At the same time, we also leave room for play and free genre and material explorations by combining different techniques and media, we aim to engage multiple senses and build bridges between the visible, the audible, and the tangible.

And how are things with you? Tell us what you think of the packages; we are very curious. We look forward to receiving your letter by return of post. You will find stationery and a stamp included.

Thinking of you often,

The SLKÖ community
