The past two years have whirled the world from one global emergency to another, which – overlapping each other – generated even more complex ecological, economic, and social phenomena. In 2022, we need more than ever to respond to what happened, plan the future, and take action now, leaving the conventional context and behavior patterns behind. Creative professionals play a key role here – arts and design can help us question the established structures and find alternatives that can lead to a more sustainable future in terms of both ecology and society.

The exhibition summarizes the works of the students having been awarded the Stefan Lengyel Scholarship of Excellence: each of them was created in the past two years, thus giving an authentic image of the questions of concern to young creators, designers, and researchers in this turbulent period. The scholarship program was launched by the Foundation for Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in fall 2020 with the aim to grant performance-based and professional support to students who propose outstanding ideas with their projects and further development concepts. The works exhibited here are experimental concepts and research projects containing ideas which can still evolve further on different pathways. These are the first steps taken towards creative and firm decisions which may shape our future and the fate of the design profession.

The students of the Institutes for Design, Theoretical Studies, Architecture and Media researched the modes of sustainability of urbanization, the critical interpretation of the past, the bridging of social gaps, the contemporary challenges of design and the development possibilities of the creative industry in their own micro environments, but their responses are also valid in a global context. In each block of the exhibition, the works of the different programs are grouped along similar designer mindsets and topics covered, thus strengthening the polyphony of the exhibition and the dialogue between the different areas of the profession. The installation mode of the exhibition invites the visitor to interactive discovery and reception, while reflecting a state where something is still evolving and developing in a safe environment.
